Delegando responsabilidades

Life of a 40/40

So many people have asked me in the past "what is my daily routine as a 40/40?" There is no refined answer for this. However as of right now we have a weekly schedule. Of course it changes daily (depending of if the people are at home & of course God's plans). We work Monday-Friday mornings from 10am-12pm making new contacts. We then go back to our house for lunch. Then later in the afternoon around 3pm-7pm we continue visiting families & going through various discipling lessons. We have church services Thrusday & Sunday night at 7:00 we usually have around 15 people at these meetings. Saturdays are a little different, in the morning we have two group meetings (for disciplship) & then a youth service in the evening. Sunday morning is Escuela Dominical (Sunday School) we currently have three classes. Form 9:30-10:30 we have two classes with the yougner children (3-11yrs old). And then from 11:00am-12:00pm we have a youth class with 8 adolescent girls.

So this is my life day-day...below are just some photos of our daily work. In this ministry we work thorugh rain or shine. And in the photo below we just spent hours in Laura Bozo, returing with muddy sandles & muddy feet!

A Whole Year

August-September
Well it has been over one year since I moved to Peru. Wow! Looking back on the year God has moved mountains. Not only through the people of Peru but through me as well. One of the most common questions people ask me from home is; “If you had the chance to do this again would you?” I reply with a smile, “God only knows. I love this rollercoaster that I am on. But in order for me to do this again I need to be called. I would how ever been more willing & not question my call as much the second time around.”
We even celebrated our first anniversary as a family. On August 31 (real anniversary was August 28th) we spent the day sleeping in, relaxing, talking with family, chillin by the pool, & then later that evening we had West Virginia Fried Chicken, Onion Rings, French Fries, Milk Shakes, & Carrot Cake with Ice Cream. Of course any good American celebration is done with good food. We then played games & watched movies.
Over the past two month work has been really really busy. Nancy & I have been in the process of finding new contacts. While; at the same time, handing over our work & responsibility to the members of Laura Bozo. I never thought it would so hard to give up these responsibilities. Building a church is like raising a child or an animal. You cradle it & only want the best for it. Then when it is time for it (these new believers) to walk on their own (I’m proud) it’s hard to give up that grip & watch from the sidelines (especially through the hard times when mistakes or made). But I am learning to put my faith in God. All things are truly possible through the Omega.
At the end of August we had our first Baptism. The 30th of August is a national day for Baptism here in Peru. We all took off for the river at 7 in the morning. Just imagine over 70 people standing around, in a circle, signing praises to our king & confessing our love. We had over 30 people from all the Nazarene Churches here in Pucallpa. From Laura Bozo we had 3 teen girls confess their passion for God. It was a beautiful sight & I was very happy to be a part of this experience. After these dedications we spent time swimming & playing games.

God's Grace

These past two weeks, since Nancy has returned, have been very eventful to say the least. Just when we seem to be getting ahead we hit another bump in the road. But through everything we look to God for guidance & he seem to pull us through it.

One of the problems happened about a week ago (I think it was a Thursday…so we worked a full day & then had our evening service), Nancy & I had a very busy. We had just arrived home (around 9pm), ate dinner, & where settling down with our friends we received a knock at our door. One of our adolescent girls was standing outside our front door crying. We brought her in, offered her some tea, & them begin to try to figure out what was wrong. It turns out she had some problems at home & was afraid to go home….so end the end she ran to where she said she felt safest….into the arms of Nancy & me. We called her parents to let them know she was safely with us & that we would take her home the following morning to sort things out. That evening as we listened & prayed…we learned so much about the people of Laura Bozo…their needs, wants, hopes & dreams. The following morning came quickly & as we headed out to Laura Bozo we first (the three of us girls) sat down & prayed with each other (asking for guidance & wisdom). When we arrived at the home the mom rushed to the front door & embraced her daughter (mom was the only one at home). Nancy & I said very little over the next 3 hours. Instead we sat in as mediators trying to help each person say what he/she was thinking & then having the other person truly listen. In the end the daughter gained more respect for her Mom & the Mom is finally realizing her little girl is growing up & is capable of making some decisions on her own.

I do think that Nancy & I are running into more problems now because the people in our church feel more comfortable with us. In this way they are able to be open with us. These problems have always been there it’s just now the people of Laura Bozo are trying to fix these problems in their lives & our seeking our advice to do so.

Now on to some happy news….over the past month we have been meeting with teens & starting up a teen group. We have about 14 adolescent girls who attend our class each week (sadly no boys have had the courage to show up yet). This is a huge success for only working in this area for about 3 weeks. Nancy & I felt like we should reward ourselves. But being the good mission that we are we didn’t want to celebrate this alone. So we invited all our youth & the youth from other churches here in Pucallpa to spend the day at a local pool. We had over 50 teens show up to spend the day with us (15 of those where from our area). We spent the afternoon playing games (volley, soccer, tag, ect), swimming, eating ice cream, & getting to know each other at a more personal level. It was so nice to see the girls act like teenagers as they whood over the boys & giggled as the boys showed off for them (of course we where the appropriate chaperones & kept it G rated). Many girls around this age here have so many responsibilities that they don’t get time to just go off & have fun. They are responsible for keeping the house tidy, making meals, & watching their younger siblings. It was such a blessing to see them relax & just enjoy the sun & friends.

It amazes me how fast time flies. I do miss my family & friends (who I pray for everyday) but when I get caught up in all the excitement of journey I am sometimes distracted. It is already the middle of August. And in another week we will be having our first baptisms. August 30 is a day of celebration here is Peru… It’s national Baptism day. Our church is using this time to baptize all our new believers. Please keep all the people of Peru (& especially those of Laura Bozo) in your thoughts as they decide whether they are ready to take this next step in their life with God. Also continue to pray for people of Laura Bozo continue to grow with God & that God may for ever be present in their lives.

Cosas grandiosas

A Time for Celebration

So over the past 2 weeks I have been working in Laura Bozo by myself. Other people have gone out with me, but I have done the majority of the work. My partner Nancy has been in her home town (Tarapoto) for a church function. During these past week I have used my Spanish & skills learned in class more than I ever thought I would. I have been leading classes, services, & playing games with children.

Something I have realized this week is how great the people in Laura Bozo really are. I have beomce rather close to the teens in this area. I have been leading their Sunday school the past two weeks. They not only helped me with my Spanish but also helped me to laugh through these struggles. They are wonderful women of Christ. And I know great things are are going to happen in their lives. That God has amazing plans for these young girls. It is funny to look back....I never saw myself working with this age group. I always thought they were annoying. But getting to know these individuals I know now that God has given me a passion to serve in this area. These young people are looking for guideance...they are looking for someone to support them...they are looking for someone to love them. And I guess I have the ability to do all three.

Looking back over July we have some much to celebrate for. To praise God in all he is doing in Laura Bozo. The first of August we had a special service here at the mother church (Iglesia Central). In wich all the churches here in Pucallpa came to celebrate the begining of the new month--And to celebrate all of the new believers of Christ. We had over 15 people come from Laura Bozo. We spent time praying, worshipping, singing, & spending time together. It is exciting to think what God will accomplish in the months to come.

Back to Business

The last three weeks of June I was blessed to spend in Arequipa to help out with the ministry being done there. During these three weeks (event called Love Extreme) hundreds of people’s lives where touched by our Lord. Our main event consisted of Nick V. (an individual born without arms or legs) sharing his testimony. Corresponding with this event where other speakers, medical clinics, activities for kids, & concerts. When the main event ended in Arequipa many individuals (from the states) spent the following week doing impact in the other 6 communities (Pucallpa being one of these). Unfortunately I f was unable to travel back for our short term project in Pucallpa. During the week and ½ I was involved in the follow-up team or consolidation team. Where we took the 500 or more names or new believers & began follow up to start our discipleship process.

But as I returned back to Pucallpa I realized how much my heart is with these people, with these people, with my home. We are now having church service twice a week--with an average of 12-15 people per week. This past week we celebrated the birth of Leidy—we are disciplining her mom Lleni. We had snacks, played games, prayed for the family, & dedicated her life to God.

We have also started having Sunday school for young females. This last Sunday was our third reunion and each week we have has over 6 girls attend each time. We not only do lesson pertaining to their lives but also have some fun doing manicures or pedicures, making jewelry, & of course eating sweets.

These people have taken a piece of my heart. I feel at ease, I feel at home, as hard as it is to be away from my family I know I’m suppose to be here. Please continue to pray for the people of Peru, of Pucallpa, of Laura Bozo that they may encounter God like we have.

Love Extreme (Main Event) Arequipa, Peru

Love Extreme

These past two weeks Nancy & I have been in Arequipa, Peru helping out our brothers & sisters. Our main part here is consoladation or spiritual counselors. After the huge event on 6/19 & 6/20 (where we have Nick Vujicic, Tammy Trent, Felix Vargas, & many more famous names come to give their testimony & sing) we followed up with the new believers. For Love Extreme (the main event) we had over 10,000 people & about 80% accept Christ. God was truly at work & present here in Arequipa. We went to visit individaul houses where we invited them to join the church & start discipleship. This past weekend Extreme put on a Spiritual Retreat. We had 24 new believers at this retreat. Where we started to disciple them on how to live their lives with God. Praise God, we had 4 peple be baptized. The 40/40's here in Arequipa have their work cut out for them. But with God in the middle of it we our bound to see more miracles happen.

Thank you for all your payer and support for this event. With out prayer & the presence of God none of this would have happened!

Thought of the Week: "You shall rest. DO not be afraid. Just submit to me. Do not look upon circumstances, do not look upon yourself, & do not look to tohers. Pray more & you shall see my glory"

God is truly amazing he is capable of all things...through everything I have been through he still surprises me with his presence & faithfullness. Lets give praise to our King today for what he has accomplised & for what he still has planned.

Preparing for Love Extreme (Pucallpa)

Over the past week my group has been preparing for LOVE EXTREME. We will be participating in Love Extreme 2. Where a group of short term volunteer from USA will start their ministry in Arequipa (for 5 days) and then head up here to Pucallpa (for a week) to do social projects. They will be cleaning streets, washing & cutting hair, giving manicures & pedicures, plaing with kids....but most importantly showing the love of CHRIST.

It has been a very busy week. But I am excited to see what doors God opens through this project. Please keep my team in your prayers as we continue to do Gods work!!

Breaking Through!!

5/25/10—We started out the morning with meetings. But there were no devotions with Pastor because it was raining. Everything is cancelled in Pucallpa when is down pours. This is because of poor transportation. After lunch Nancy & I went to visit 2 families (Roci & Gorge and Francisco). Both Roci and Francisco accepted Christ last Thursday after we showed the movie. So we talked about what that prayer meant and set up a time next week to start disciplining them.
5/26/10—This morning was a rather quick visit. No one seems to be home in the mornings. Afternoons/ Evenings seem to be better to catch up with people. We meet with Esteban to discuss tomorrow night & our first church service!! We then invited everyone we have been visiting to come. Today was our first day of English class—but no one showed up. Oh well God will work in other ways! We plan on holding another class next week to see if we get any other people interested. We continue to meet more people & our schedule is filling up. God is definitely at work here—it is nice to be in the middle of it.

5/28/10 --Last night we had our first church service. We had 9 adults and 6 kids attend. Not too bad! Pastor Dario preached & Nancy sang. Next week we should have more people because this week there was a lot of rain. Laura Bozo was covered with mud and that made it difficult to walk around, especially for the older generations. God is at work here in Pucallpa. I am just truly grateful to be able to share the love of God. Today we had many plans but most them changed. I have learned that it is not my work but Gods—and Nancy & I can plan everything out but in the end it is his plans. We were supposed to meet up with an elderly man. But when we got to his house his daughter said he was asleep and it would be best for us to come back another time. So we started walking & ended up at Nysie’s house. Her sister (21 years old) is dying. And the family actually let us go in this time to pray for her. Thankfully, she has already accepted Christ and was living a life with him. It is a very sad and hard time for the family right now. I can’t even imagine losing my sisters right now. But God is at work in their heart and they seem at ease that her life is in God’s hands. We spent 2 hours with this family and ended up missing our appt. with Louisa. We did however, meet up with Yolanda & her daughter and started the 2nd lesson of discipleship. The daughter was ready the accept God when she got called away to an emergency. All in God’s timing. The next visit was the Katie’s house. She was busy working her little store so we sat and talked for a little bit to see how she was doing. It turned out her uncle has gotten worse. She asked if we would be willing to go to his house and pray for him. So later that night Nancy & I went to this man’s house—we only had direction, didn’t know him personally, and didn’t know the family. We walked up to the house and explained we where friends of Katie. They opened their home to us. As I sat there I was taken by sadness. But why should I be sad this man said he lived his life for God. That he was not afraid to go home to his father. He was just ready for the pain of this world to past. We prayed for him and his physical pain and then talked to the family a little bit. We are scheduled to go back and visit them next week.

5/29/10—Today was a rough day for me. I have been sick for the past two days. Stomach problems…I am feeling better but my body is so tired. For Sunday school Nancy went with our cluster support family (The Fosters) she said that we had 12 kids show up this Sunday.—and that it was the same from the past two weeks and of the families we have been disciplining! She then went to go visit Estaban because we were suppose to start discipleship classes with him and his friends. She rescheduled if for next week and gave him the material to prepare for next week. In this group we have 10 people who want to learn more about the Church of the Nazarene. This group attended another Christian Church. But since then the Church closed and they haven’t found another to attend. So we will start the process with them—probably moving at a faster pace because they are already Christians. But it is important to do the whole discipleship process with them so that when they finish they may equipped to disciple others as well. Tonight we have a celebration at the mother Church (Central). We have invited many individuals from Laura Bozo to be a part of this. It is more of a welcoming party for new members and believers!! It should be a pretty good time and it will be nice to see how much work God has been doing in all Pucallpa!

Nuevos retos

Nuestro sentir.

Sunday School

We have had two week of work so far. We are currently discipleing four familys. God is truly at work and in the center of everything we do with this community. Doors and hearts seem to be just opening up around us. We don't know how to schedule everyone in one day.

This coming Thursday we have our first culto or church service out in Laura Bozo. We shall see how it goes. But at this point it seem to be a fmaily and their friends. May God continue to soften peoples hearts and prepare the way for his kingdom.

We had our second Sunday School this last week. We had over 15 returning kids. Most of which are from families who we are discipleing. Below is a few pictures of our lession and then some fun time with games and songs with Rico our Extreme mascot!!!

Getting Started!!! 5/10-5/15

We have at last made it to our final destination!! After months of training, praying, and preparing we have started our first church plant. Nancy & I have been working in Laura Bozo (or Proceres de la Independencia) for the past two weeks. On Mandy and Tuesday of last week we spent the time walking around, learning the area (roads, stores, restaurants, people, and needs in this neighborhood).
Things in Peru are not well mapped out and roads seem to be going ever which way. Pastor Dario (the District Superintendent) has a huge map of Pucallpa. But as we where narrowing down our district we noticed that houses, road, and places where left out. From this we mapped out our church plant and drew out the area. Above is our home drawn map—just remember that our spiritual gift is not drawing.
Wednesday and Thursday we had off for a conference for team building. We took this time to recollect our thoughts and come together as a team. During this time we discussed what our expectations are for each other, how we were doing in our church plants and spiritual lives here, and time to relax and recollect spiritually.
Friday morning we meet with the president of our district. This person is almost like a Mayor of the town. The meeting went rather well we have support of the community and they are excited and welling to help out as much as they can to fulfill this process.
Later Friday afternoon we began going house to house to meet people who attended our medical clinic (through Extreme) in February. We have many families who are very interested in starting Bible Studies with us and to begin the discipleship programs. Please be in pray for these families as God continues to soften their hearts and teach him his will for their lives.
Sunday morning we had our first Sunday school in the community center located in the plaza or center of the community. We had over 30 kids attend Sunday school. We played games, sang songs, and talked about being obedient to God and to our parents (using the story of Jonah). We plan on doing this every Sunday morning to allow a place for kids to come have fun and learn good values!!
I am very excited for the next few weeks to come and to see what God has in store for the communities of Pucallpa. Please continue to pray for Laura Bozo along with the other communities in Peru being touched by Gods grace.
